the curse of monte da mina narrates the lives of the students from the class of ’82 to ’86 who attended the monte da mina school. the texts by nuno sousa and ana torrie fictionalize each student’s life, always culminating in a tragic ending. on the left page, a brief text identifies the student and their tragic biography; on the right page, a drawing by ana torrie appears. the drawings replicate the solemn and formal poses traditionally adopted when taking photographs in the past. i get the impression that the authors started from a set of photographs—similar to those sold at the vandoma market—and then imagined a tragic narrative for each image. texts by erradiador on the blog my nation underground.
