- Animais! ("Animals!") presents a collection of images and texts with no apparent connection to one another. The texts are taken from captions in popular science books aimed at families, widely read during the 1970s, and address subjects relating to adolescence, nutrition and old age among humans.
The images depict anthropomorphic animals and animal-like humans in constant interaction. Amid this apparent chaos, a message emerges: Instinct is gone, but appetite remains. Humanity strives at all costs to distance itself from the rest of the animal kingdom and, in doing so, forgets something fundamental: its own nature. Yes, we too have our place in Linnaeus's classification system.
The volume opens with an excerpt from Charles Darwin's 1872 work, The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals.
In Animais!, José Feitor further explores the concept of graphic appropriation, freely incorporating images and texts created by others into a unique combination. Chance and concept coexist throughout this graphic project.
